The Land Transport Authority (LTA) had expressed disappointment at the increasing number of motorists disobeying road safety rules and putting the lives of road users at risk.

This after reports from the Fiji Police Force showed that from October 16 to October 18, 452 drivers were booked for speeding and 11 for drunk driving, leading to the cause of two very serious accidents.

LTA board chairman James Sowane said the numbers demonstrated a complete lack of regard for the safety of road users.

He said the statistics were alarming and raised a great deal of concern about whether Fijian drivers truly understood the responsibility they shouldered while driving. “Road rules, road signs, and speed limits are very clear,” he said.

“If you plan your travels properly, I see absolutely no reason for driving beyond the given speed limit – this is just sheer irresponsibility.”

LTA acting chief executive officer Irimaia Rokosawa added that as Fiji moved closer to the festive season, it was imperative that motorists took safety measures more seriously as traffic movement was expected to increase in the coming months.

“Each driver has gone through a rigorous process to attain their driver’s licence and this is not a responsibility to take lightly or to take for granted – it is not merely a plastic card that you carry around with you,” Mr Rokosawa said.

“It signifies the trust that we have placed on a driver and we urge each licenced driver to stand in solidarity with us and abide by the road safety rules and speed limits, for the safety of all road users.” |
