LTA to crack down on overloaded buses

Listen to this article:

FIJI’S Land Transport Authority (LTA) enforcement officers will be checking for overloaded buses and will also be issuing Traffic Infringement Notices from today.

LTA chief executive officer Samuel Simpson said the T.I.Ns would be issued if buses were found to be carrying excess passengers as per the PSV Regulation.

It was highlighted by the CEO that overloaded buses were a contributor to many fatal accidents on our roads.

Mr Simpson said vehicles reacted when the maximum weight they were designed to carry were exceeded.

He said an overloaded bus could cause the tyres to overheat and wear rapidly.

Mr Simpson said during the night, the headlights of an overloaded bus would tilt up, blinding the oncoming drivers.

The CEO said that an insurance cover on an overloaded vehicle may be void because overloading was illegal.

Mr Simpson said LTA would carry out e-ticketing inspections as well whereby passengers’ e-tickets would be checked to ensure compliance with the regulation.
