FIJI’S Land Transport Authority (LTA) has reminded parents and guardians of the need to ensure their children are safe and not exposed to the dangers of playing near roads and traffic.

LTA chief executive officer Samuel Simpson said in a statement that with the school break already on, public roads would be a lot busier building up to and during the festive season.

“We urge parents to take extra care in this regard to avoid the tragedy of a road accident involving children. Parents should always know where their children are playing and ensure children are safe,” Mr Simpson said.

“Roads and motor vehicles are a dangerous mixture for children, and keeping them safe is very important,” he added.

Mr Simpson has urged parents to reiterate road safety messages at home – to only cross the road at a recognised crossing after checking it is safe to do so, not to cross the road from in between parked vehicles, and not to cross suddenly.
