The cases of cancer recorded among children clearly shows the killer disease does not care about age, gender, creed or the colour of your skin, says Suva Golden Oldies Rugby Club vice-president Kanito Lovobalavu.
He said the latest patient recorded by the Fiji Cancer Society of a 15-year-old boy diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma was concerning.
“That shows, for a fact, that cancer does not care about your background, it affects everybody,” Mr Lovobalavu said.
He said there was need for cancer awareness so people could understand how deadly the disease was.
He said their club’s awareness programs were centred around men’s health.
“Our club is associated with a certain group of individuals who are men over the age of 40 and our fight is against prostate cancer.
“We continue to work with our business partners to raise awareness on prostate cancer.”
He said prostate cancer awareness programs had reached as far as the interior of Namosi and Tailevu.
“Through the Movember campaign, we managed to reach out to our communities because we want women and children to help us with our pursuit to raise awareness on prostate cancer and its impact on families.
“If any man succumbs to prostate cancer, the family will be severely affected, especially if the men are the sole breadwinners.”
He said they had worked with business partners to cover some costs for prostate cancer patients.
“We urge women or family members, if they see the symptoms of prostate cancer on one of their male relatives or family members, please take them to the hospital for a medical check-up.”
Mr Lovobalavu thanked their business partners – the Fiji Cancer Society, BSP Life, Nivea Men and Pacific Laboratory Specialists.
He said they worked in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.
