The People’s Alliance party hopes the 2022-2023 National Budget eliminates the need for “lollies or sweeteners” in the form of “freebies” in light of the upcoming general elections.

Party leader Sitiveni Rabuka said they hoped that the Government would opt for a responsible budget.

“We also hope this upcoming budget will see a deliberate effort to reduce the budget deficit by prudent allocation and accurate revenue forecasting,” he said.

“It is also our hope that this Government will cast some serious consideration for the post-economic trauma recovery process by allocating more resources to productive sectors so that our economy can grow and reduce imports at the same time through import substitution, incentivising sugar and non-sugar agriculture including yaqona, tavioka and dalo production, as well as the prudent harvesting of our fish and other marine resources.

“In doing these, we believe the Government is duty-bound to right-size and right-cost its bureaucracy.”

He said the Government must not sell key assets.

“Whatever else they do, they must not sell our strategic and sovereign assets as in our seaports and our airports.”
