The inability of India-based operators to travel currently has resulted in locals being trained to operate mechanical harvesters once the 2020 cane crushing season starts.

All mechanical harvesters operational in Fiji were purchased from India and as part of the deal, the supplier provided an operator from India.

The current travel restrictions due to COVID-19 has made it impossible for these operators to return to Fiji.

“Indian-based operators are unable to travel to Fiji in time for start of harvesting,” said Fiji Sugar Corporation CEO Graham Clark.

“FSC has facilitated training of 86 individuals from all three mill areas.”

Locals are using online training materials provided by suppliers, supported by FSC staff.

Hopefully, all will be able to operate, subject to owner support, said Mr Clark.
