NINE local swimming clubs turned up at the Long Course Grand Prix event – Fiji Swimming’s first event of the year – at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Laucala Bay, Suva yesterday.

Association general manager David Dugucanavanua said it was pleasing to see the good turnout of clubs after the Christmas break.

“It is reassuring to see that after the Christmas break and the holiday season, our swimmers were able to get back and sacrifice their time into training,” Dugucanavanua said.

“This year, our competition calendar is starting early because we want to be able to give a lot of times to our swimmers to prepare themselves and be consistent throughout the season till the Pacific Games.”

Fiji Swimming will have three Grand Prix competitions before the national games.

“This competition is one of the three that we host to allow our swimmers to be eligible for nationals. So basically you cannot swim in nationals without getting a qualifying time in the Grand Prix.”

Swimmers in the national extended squad will have to try and make the Pacific Games qualifying time in order to make it into the final team.
