Fiji Rugby Union women’s development manager Vela Naucukidi believes local players have proved themselves to be in the Fijiana 15s team.
During an interview yesterday at the National Provincial Girls 7s tournament Naucukidi said local competitions were crucial in identifying players.
“I believe it has increased the numbers in terms of the performance of the Fijiana Drua,” she said.
“When we went to Japan a few of the girls that took part in the ANZ Marama Championship made their Test debut for Fiji.
“We could see that breaking into the national team, our local players were being selected. “And now prepping for the Fijiana Drua for the new season.
“Because some of the current players in the Fijiana Drua have gotten contracts overseas.
“So they will be moving, there will be spaces in the team.
“You never know, some of these players might actually be donning the Drua and Fijiana 7s and 15s jersey soon.”
Naucukidi said the month of September was commemorated for women in rugby.
“We always celebrate women in rugby month.
“The whole of Oceania region and the theme for this year is — all in.
“We have a few women referees that were officiating at this year’s National Provincial Girls 7s competition.
“And we have male referees who will be mentoring them towards the completion of their level two course.”
