Our centenarian

It was pleasing to read that President Jioji Konrote and First Lady Sarote Konrote paid a surprise visit to our centenarian Veniana Nakolinivalu at her Nasukamai Village in the province of Ra. I accord a big thank you to President Konrote for meeting the matriarch and presenting her with a plaque to commemorate her reaching 100 years of age. In return, our centenarian read verses from the Holy Bible to President Konrote. Veniana is living testimony that faith in God and healthy living habits make people live longer! RAJNESH ISHWAR LINGAM

Swipe at the Times

I am saddened to read in The Fiji Times (27/10) that again the Minister of Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, takes a swipe at the newspaper, when interrupting a statement raised by a farmer in Labasa.Vijay Naidu, a farmer from Wailevu in Labasa was simply raising that he was reading in The Fiji Times and heard over the radio about government assistance for farmers who planted new cane, however, no assistance had been provided for them. Instead of answering the question to alleviate the uncertainty around the issue raised, I believe Mr Sayed-Khaiyum interrupted and said that The Fiji Times never always writes Government’s stories. First of all, what has The Fiji Times’ stories got to do with the issue raised about the Government mentioned assistance that are not reaching the farmers? As a keen reader of the newspaper, I know that The Fiji Times does regularly highlight many government news. Last but not the least, I would request the Minister for Economy that if he is visiting the people at the grassroot level, in this case the sugarcane farmers in Labasa, please do not just hear them out but listen to their voices and not bring in your personal differences with others or the news media which complicates what people are facing on the ground. Kositatino Tikomaibolatagane Vuninokonoko Rd, Navua

A-G’s comments

The A-G’s remarks, “Times, hum log ke baat sub time nahi likhe” does not need any defending at all because he is absolutely correct. Times, sub log ke baat sub time likhe hai as long as they are within regulatory parameters because government’s, opposition’s, hamar, tumar aur padosi ke baat matters. Besides he couldn’t have made such an observation without reading it daily, I think he was very polite. Though some exceptions arise when The Fiji Times faces mission impossible because of questions sent to iske aur uske paas remain unanswered. Mohammed Imraz Janif Natabua, Lautoka

Another swipe

The recent swipe at The Fiji Times is uncalled for especially when the newspaper is doing its duty ethically, morally and correctly. Even our sugarcane farmers read the newspaper! They know that it is the trusted brand. Isa, Fred Wesley and The Fiji Times — please continue with the great reporting! Rajnesh Ishwar Lingam Nadawa, Nasinu

Marijuana issue Until recently, we thought marijuana was grown exclusively on the island of Kadavu. We now have reports of marijuana plants being uprooted in other parts as well. May be a subject for investigative journalism — why farmers grow this plant, what attracts them to growing this plant, where and how it is sold, who are their customers, which is the common mode of transaction and transportation of the final product and how many farmers realise the consequences of their actions and so on.
