Wonder Roy
So much has been said about Fiji soccer. Some people have even gone to the extent of saying that Fiji soccer will only play bazaar soccer and we will not progress up the rankings. Well, for me Roy Krishna is a mighty fine example of the individual doing things for himself and going places. He has set the standard, so to all soccer lovers and players — take your cue from him and lift the standard of your game and go to where Roy has reached. Congratulations Roy. Capacity building
Responsibility walks hand in hand with capacity and power so said JG Holland; novelist. You have the power, we have the capacity (doubters excluded). Try us. Let’s see if together we can bring in a responsible result. Go on then. MANOJ LAL PATEL Drasa Ave, Lautoka
Getting connected
Thank you Allen Lockington for your appreciation of my “getting connected” letter! To answer your question, I’ve never really been in a situation where I had no one to connect to, so it’s hard for me to think of how one can connect without a partner! The only thing that comes to mind is to wear warm clothing, put on socks, a beanie over your head, a scarf around your neck, and warm hand gloves. As for the gloves if you are right handed just wear the left glove and if you left handed then wear the right gloves. Keep your working hand free! Free to connect to whatever you feel like! That will definitely get you some warmth! Simon Hazelman Rava Estate, Savusavu
Plastic bags
The question should be (and I keep asking) if indeed plastic bags are that bad then why the government does not ban it totally…why make money from a deadly product? The answer is a simple one. I believe all the bags in the supermarkets are for the government to extract money. Remember previously it was at the cost of the supermarkets. Now the customer pays and the government makes the money. Bill Kunavatu Lautoka
A point made
The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre co-ordinator has a point in questioning if the director of Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination was working for police. It is unusual that the director meet the claimed perpetrators first instead of the victim. Sailosi Naewe Naduru Rd, Nausori
Congratulations in order
Congratulations to Jack’s Nadi and AFL Suva Football teams playing the final of the Vodafone Fiji FACT at Churchill Park, Lautoka last Sunday. Nadi and Suva qualified with four and five points respectively while favourites Lautoka and Ba topped their respective pools with seven points. Nadi beat Suva 2-1 to notch their fifth title with the $17,000 top prizemoney that will be deservedly shared by the Nadi football squad. Fiji Football Association will be laughing all the way to the bank in staging the tournament for two consecutive weeks that attracted a decent crowd. Personally, I believe hosting the Fiji FACT, Battle of Giants and the Inter District Championship is just a money making exercise for Fiji FA. I believe winning any of the above named tournaments has no positive bearing to any district to qualify for the all important OFC Champions League. The national league is the main target to achieve that goal. In recent years Ba and Lautoka have stamped their mark in terms of qualification and with the National League leader board seems these two districts are on course to represent Fiji again. Therefore, it is very important for all the districts to concentrate on the national league and let their development teams play in those events that only benefit FFA. Anyway, once again I have to focus on the Fiji Airways Fiji 7s team in the last leg of the HSBC World 7s series and celebrate the home coming of the 2018/19 series title. Toso Viti toso. What is happiness
SO what constitutes happiness? Happiness is often equated with a person’s quantity of; wealth, education, status and power. These things can be a source of happiness for a short-term, unfortunately. But we want happiness to be more permanent and lasting. I think happiness is found outside of self. A Chinese proverb tells us how happiness happens. It is framed as follows; “If you want to be happy for a day, go fishing. If you want to be happy for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want to be happy for a lifetime, help somebody.” Happiness factor is other-cenered and altruistic rather than self-centred. SACHIDA NATH Nadi
Bus fare scheme
PEOPLE will misuse and abuse what does not belong to them and what they did not work for. It is natural. People have abused many initiatives of the Government because they were told it is free. But that is not the case. They are not free. People’s hard earned money has funded those initiatives. One of those initiatives is the bus fare scheme for students. It was expected that students’ cards would be lost and cards would be used by others. Why? Because it is free. The sense of responsibility will only settle in when students and parents will be made to take care of all logistics for lost cards. Just in the second week of this term, students are boarding buses and their card balances have already been used up. The bus driver has no option but to let the students in. The students know this very well and are taking advantage. They know the bus driver will end up in trouble if he disallows them to get in. The Ministry of Education will charge $5 for replacing a card on the second occasion. I think the students can get away without paying because they can have their way. Can the Ministry of Education make a student walk to school upon failure to pay $5? I don’t think so. On the other hand, if the same $5 rule would had been introduced by a school head or teacher in the name of instilling a sense of responsibility, imagine the problems. The abuse is rife because the systems in place are making students irresponsible. This irresponsible behaviour is costing the nation and it’s contributors. MOHAMMED IMRAZ JANIF, Natabua, Lautoka
Bus terminal
DURING the last downpour certain areas in the Suva bus station leaked so badly that the public either got wet, or moved to the market area for shelter. It does not have to be a heavy downpour, even smaller downpours. It’s been there for quite some time and it seems to be moving around as one is fixed there is another opening. It’s simply saying it needs a full renovation or a new and modern bus terminal for Suva City. The taxpayers of Suva deserve a new bus terminal. TOMASI BOGINISO Nasinu
ADB volunteers
A VOLUNTEER is a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task! The simple fact that the Opposition has questioned if volunteers got paid brings to question their understanding and brings to light the fact that they have no idea what they are talking about? The poor quality of the Opposition continues to be exposed and it’s becoming more and more of a joke now. Seriously! SIMON HAZELMAN Savusavu
Contestants
OF the seven Tebara Carnival contestants, one of them has a unique name. She is Shiksha Lata. Her first name Shiksha, means education when translated into English. Her second name Lata represents plants which spread their stems and branches as they grow. Combined, they mean spreading education. Quite a meaningful and unique name. Arms cargo
WE learn from RT News 15/05 that a Saudi Arabian ship was forced to leave France without arms cargo after public protest. All I can say is that we should have more protests like that around the world to make the world a more peaceful one for humanity. RAJEND NAIDU Chiang Mai, Thailand
RIP Nimi
A BIG vinaka vakalevu to Eroni Tuinuku and The Fiji Times for doing a wonderful coverage on the achievements of Nadroga trainer Nimilote Dau who passed away last week after a short illness and was buried yesterday in Rukurukulevu. I’m sure that the Stallions will play in his memory and deliver the goods against the Highlanders on Saturday. Nimi’s achievements will always be cherished by Nadroga Rugby Union and Cuvu College as he had been instrumental in moulding players. RIP Nimi! RAJNESH ISHWAR LINGAM, Nadawa, Nasinu
