LELEAN Memorial School Bulldogs defeated Marist Brothers High School Storms 12-8 to successfully retain the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League under-17 title at the ANZ Stadium yesterday.

The Davuilevu brigade was stretched to the wire by a gutsy Storms outfit securing the win in extra time after both teams were tied 8-all at fulltime.

The win was special for Lelean as the school will be celebrating its 75th anniversay year.

The other two tries were scored by Poni Amo and Michael Ofati.

Head coach Viliame Gucake commended his troops for the hard-fought win.

“Coming in as defending champion, we knew Marist would be tough to beat,” he said.

“I have been telling the boys ‘you need to give your 100 per cent and once you do the basics right the results will take care of itself’.

“And I am glad the boys did just that giving us this special win as we will be celebrating its 75th diamond jubilee this year.”

Gucake thanked the school principal, teachers, administrators, parents and old scholars for supporting the team to secure another great victory.

Meanwhile, Nasinu won the under-15 title from LMS.

The two teams were tied 14-all at the end of extra time but the rule of the game allowed Nasinu to win the title after scoring the first try of the match.
