THE wellbeing and health of a lawyer is important for their longevity in the legal fraternity, says Prison Fellowship Singapore chairman and founder of Wan Kindness Dr William Wan.

While speaking at the Kingdom International Legal Network Conference in Sigatoka yesterday, he explained the need for lawyers to prioritise their spiritual and physical health.

“Sleep deprivation, deep depression and mental stress are all very real illnesses that affect lawyers today,” he said.

“More and more in today’s society we are losing lawyers to suicide which is something that we need to address.

“If we are not careful we will burn out and when that happens many things can affect us especially on a mental capacity.”

He explained that one of keys to relieving stress and ensures wellbeing was to focus on their spiritual life.

“How many of us have spent time reading the Bible at least once a day?

“We spent countless of hours reading through case studies and case files but we will not spare time to read the Bible.

“That is something that we need to change about ourselves. Have the personal discipline to set aside time for God.

“The presence of God’s peace in our lives is very important because it underpins every other health related aspects of our lives.

“Feeding ourselves with the spiritual food will strengthen our spiritual health.”

Dr Wan is an author, a lawyer and consultant with the Goodwins Law Corporation based in Singapore
