Lautoka to host junior tennis

TENNIS Fiji will host the inaugural Nations Cup at the Regional Tennis Complex in Nadovu Lautoka in June.

The Nations Cup will feature Pacific Island countries playing in the Davis Cup format tournament.

Tennis Fiji president Richard Breen said they had a big year ahead.

Breen said their junior development work would continue.

“Paul Owen from Australia is a new volunteer who will be setting up schools programs in Suva,” he said.

“Sachin Reddy is in Auckland, New Zealand officiating in the ASB Classic. Tony Connell has taken the Pacific Oceania team to Australia.

“A couple of juniors will be going to New Zealand soon to participate in tournaments there.

“The Fiji Open will be held from May 23-27 followed by the inaugural Nations Cup. We have support from the Fiji National Sports Commission for hosting the Nations Cup.”

Fiji had success at the Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu winning two silver medals.

Breen said junior coach Krishneel Kumar would be travelling to Japan to understudy high performance coaches.

“During his stay he will try and set up a tour for our under-14 and U16 which will probably take place at the end of the year,” Breen said
