Lautoka hopes for BOG victory

REEBOK/Shop N Save Lautoka is hoping it would be third time lucky when the side participates at the upcoming Inkk Mobile Battle of the Giants.

The Blues reached the finals of the BOG in 2013 and 2014 but missed out on the title.

In the 2013 final, Lautoka went down to Ba 3-1 while last year the Sugar City team was edged by Rewa 2-1.

So far this season, the Lambert Sarju coached side finished fourth in the Rewa Galaxy Premier League and was bundled out of the Vodafone Fiji FACT by Labasa in the semi-final at Prince Charles Park in Nadi.

The biggest worry for Lautoka is the injury to their top marksman Ratu Josefata Dugucagi. The striker has a swollen ankle and hasn’t been training with the squad.

Lautoka Football Association vice-president Abdul Kadar said the players were working on their fitness level.

Kadar said there was a long break after the final round of the Premier League.

“Fitness will be the key factor when playing three 90 minute games in as many days,” he said.

“Ratu Josefata is going through physiotherapy and we are keeping our fingers crossed that he will recover in time for the tournament. He is an experienced player and one of the leaders in the team.”

Lautoka is pooled in Group B with Tailevu Naitasiri, Suva and Nadi. Group A includes Labasa, Nadroga, Ba and Rewa.

Kadar said the pools were even.

“All the teams will be gunning for victory,” he said.

“We face Tailevu Naitasiri first up and they have a lot to prove after being demoted to the senior division from next season. The boys are training twice daily.”

The BOG kicks off at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori next Friday.
