Members of the Lautoka Golf Club are in celebration mode after Government lifted the COVID-19 pandemic sports restrictions on Sunday.
After months of lockdown and no sports competitions, club members are back cleaning their golf clubs, clearing the course and itching to compete in their first organised tournament.
“We are ready to rumble after months of frustration of being on lockdown because of the pandemic,” LGC chairman of trustees Raymond Singh said.
“Our members had been voicing their frustrations in the prolonged lockdown, but we thank the Prime Minister and Government for allowing sports to resume.
“We are ready for competitive golf to resume with strict protocols to be followed by fully vaccinated members.
“We are keen to round off the 2021 season with the Diwali Cup in November, club championship and the ever popular Lautoka Open which will be played for the 89th consecutive year after it was first played in 1931.
“Our members are getting the fairways and greens up to standard despite no revenue for over six months.”
He said sports resumed at the right time, especially with the coming celebration of the Diwali festival.
“It is timely as we are a multiracial and religious country. We hope to mark the festival with our Diwali Cup to kick-start our competition. We want to be the first club to return to competitive golf.
“We will comply with Government’s sports regulations. Only fully vaccinated and full financial members will be eligible to participate and other Golf Fiji affiliated clubs members are invited to come. We are happy that in good times and difficult times, our dedicated sponsors are with us all the way.
“The LGC Champion v Champion Diwali Pool Table competition will be part of the celebration.”
