A widow in Nadi has not bought anything for her daughter, who is expected to start Year 1 tomorrow.

Aishmeen Lata said it had been eight months since her husband had passed away and she had relied mostly on others to support her as her small scale business ventures had failed as well.

“I had tried to support myself and my daughter by selling roti parcels, selling sweets and even broomsticks but it has all failed,” she said.

Ms Lata said with schools opening tomorrow, she was not sure whether her daughter would go to school.

“I am worried about it and finding a new job is not easy now.”

She said added that bus services did not extend anywhere close to her house during the afternoon.

“The bus in the afternoon doesn’t come to my junction and I will have to incur a cost of $5 every day so that transport will bring her to my home.”

Ms Lata said she couldn’t bring her daughter along with her in the afternoon as she was unable to walk long distances as she suffered from asthma, diabetes and high blood pressure.
