Twenty-four children from Wakanisila in Nasinu are the pioneers of the English Access Microscholarship program launched yesterday by the United States ambassador to Fiji, Joseph Cella.

The program was launched with a grant of $70,328 and will be managed by VisionFiji, a non-government organisation (NGO) focused on children’s welfare.

Ambassador Cella said they were excited to launch this program for the first time in the Pacific.

“We are confident that by the end of this program the students’ English proficiency will be strong enough to help them attain their goals,” he said.

Chair of VisionFiji, Gazala Akbar said their program would start after July 6.

“We actually have worked out a plan for the entire year as well as next year for this program and it will be an after-school program for them,” she said.

“We will try our level best to make learning the English language fun and exciting for them.”

The program provides a foundation for English language skills for those between the ages of 13-20 years to gain the ability to compete for and participate in future exchanges and study in the United States.
