Lakeba scoops title

SEVEN years in the making, the champion Lakeba cricket team could finally rest their bats after claiming the Fiji Cricket 2016 National championship at the Albert Park yesterday.

Despite all odds, the men from the chiefly island of Lau convincingly beat the Sydney All-Stars from Australia by 49 runs.

Lakeba’s tally was 159 while the Sydney All-Stars went all out for a 110.

The Lakeba bowlers were relentless which was spearheaded by their fast bowler, Samuela Draunivudi.

His fast paced arsenal was complemented by the slick spin bowler Peni Dakai.

The deadly pair ran rampant as they kept bowling batsman after batsman out of the game which resulted in the Aussie boys’ demise.

Lakeba head coach Isoa Suka said the win had been a long time coming and he was happy that the trophy would travel to the islands.

“In past years we tried, but fell short. This year we managed to go all the way and win it, not only for us, but for all the people of Lakeba.”

He said there were eight villages on Lakeba — Tubou, Levuka, Waciwaci, Nasaqalau, Vakano, Waitabu, Yadrana and Nukunuku — and I bet they would be celebrating after they learned of what the boys had achieved here today (yesterday).

Their manager Uate Soko said the win consolidated Lakeba’s position as one of the powerhouses of cricket in Fiji.

“Our victory was not through our own individual strengths, but by the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,” Soko said.
