THE Construction Industry Council says it lacks funds to fully address issues faced by the construction industry in Fiji.

This was an issue that was highlighted by the council’s president, Gordon Jenkins, during the national building code workshop at Novotel Suva Lami Bay yesterday.

“We are definitely in search of funds to operate properly so we can address the issues before us which are out there in the construction industry. The problem for us right now is getting the finances,” he said.

Without the finances, Mr Jenkins said, it made it difficult for them to highlight other issues that were brought to their attention in the past.

“We still have a lot of issues before us like the need to address the licensing of builders and other relevant stakeholders and also to establish standards for our construction industry in Fiji,” he said.

Pacific Region Infrastructure Facility technical assistance officer Jane Romero said there was a need to put regulations in place to ensure a better quality product in the industry and maintain the structural integrity of buildings.

She said it was important to understand that the construction industry should also involve building in rural areas because they were most affected during natural disasters.
