CANE farmers of Nawaicoba in Nadi say labour issues continue to plague the sugar industry.

During the National Sugar Industry Policy consultation yesterday, farmers with farms located on hilly terrains said in the last season, they faced a number of challenges to get cane cutters.

According to farmers, it was difficult to source manual cutters and in some cases, they had disappeared after receiving their payment.

This led to farmers cutting cane themselves.

Fiji Sugar Corporation chief operating officer Navin Chandra said they would operate a harvester on hilly farms on a trial basis this year.

He also said they would relook at the way mechanical and manual harvesters operated.

More reports from the consultation in today’s (Tuesday, January 29, 2019) edition of The Fiji Times.
