Labasa in uphill battle

The Digicel Labasa team’s dream of winning the first-ever OFC Women’s Champions League was dashed when the side went down to New Caledonia’s AS Academy Féminine 4-1 in its third match in Papua New Guinea on Monday evening.

Labasa went into the match having one loss and a win, and needed a positive result to keep in contention for a first-place berth.

Christelle Wahnawe got the New Caledonians ahead in the 34th minute which saw them lead 1-nil at half-time.

Alice Wenessia doubled the lead in the 47th minute while Wahnave added two more in a space of three minutes.

Unaisi Tuberi got one back for Labasa with 15 minutes left but it was a little too late.

Labasa lies fourth on the standings with three points while AS Academy Féminine lead the standings with six points.

Koloale FC is in second spot with six points while Hekari United lie in third spot with three points.

Labasa is on a bye in round four and will face Hekari United in its last match at 7pm on Saturday.
