The National Youth Climate Action Summit was a testament that Fiji’s youth played a vital role towards policy making and nation building, says Minister for Youth Parveen Kumar.
He made the comment at the closing of the first National Youth Summit in Suva last Thursday.
He said the summit allowed participants to have a better understanding about climate change.
“Through this summit, we have a better understanding of how and why climate signs tell us that less than ten years are left for the world to make real change towards action of climate change,” he said.
“This is not a long period and the responsibility is on all of us to work together towards sustainable inclusive resilient policies.”
He said it was everyone’s responsibility to work towards achieving low carbon emissions. “Fiji, like other small island states, is among the most endangered as the frontline on these have impact.
“I know that you have realised through this summit that it is important to have our young people to participate as agents of change as they can influence the wider society to join the fight against climate change.”
He urged participants to create awareness in their communities to mitigate the effects of climate change and adaptation.
