Former cabinet minister Parveen Kumar was elected president of Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam Fiji after life members voted a new set of national executives into office.

The new members come from the two factions that fought for 10 positions at last weekend’s annual general meeting that was held after a lapse of seven years.

Mr Kumar’s group secured three positions while seven other executive positions were won by candidates in a team led by businessman Damend Gounder.

The Opposition MP received 19 more votes than Mr Gounder.

“We need to forget about the past here tonight,” he said after the announcement of the results.

“We don’t have to criticise anyone and tarnish anyone’s image anymore.

“It’s now our responsibility that we come together and run this organisation.

“I open-heartedly call upon Mr Damend Gounder to come forward and join us in running the organisation and if we don’t do this, we will put this organisation on the same road where we were in the past seven years.”

About 1000 members from around Fiji attended the AGM in Nadi.
