The Ministry of Labour has dealt with 247 child labour cases from 2011 to June 2020, says Parveen Kumar the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations.

The Labour Ministry carried out 8237 labour inspections, including child labour inspections from January 2018 to May 2020.

Mr Kumar made the comments in a virtual high-level political meeting on sustainable development that discussed universal social protection in times of COVID-19.

He said no child should be forced into child labour, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic.

“We need to ensure, as parents and guardians, that we ourselves should not harm our children’s future by putting them in employment instead of education.

“We must take the message of child labour right to the grassroots level,” he said.

Mr Kumar added that child labour denied girls and boys the right to quality education and “to plan and to be safe from harm.”

He said COVID-19 was affecting all aspects of people’s lives now.

“COVID-19 crisis has already transformed the world with economic and labour market shock impacting not only supply and production of goods and services but also demand, consumption and investment,” he said.
