FRIENDS and family of the late Ratu Mikaele Dreu Kubuabola gathered at the Centenary Methodist Church in Suva yesterday to pay their last respects.
Ratu Mikaele was allegedly shot dead while on deployment in Mali, West Africa last month.
While delivering her eulogy at the service, Silipa Kubuabola said her husband valued everyone he knew so dearly.
“We would Skype daily despite our geographical location, distance or time difference,” she said. “When he’s on leave, he would prioritise spending as much time as possible with our children and everything else would come second.”
She said he had made trips home last year to celebrate the birthdays of his children.
“After he came for my birthday in September, he told me he had only one more objective left for him to celebrate and that was our wedding anniversary, which we celebrated on December 1,” she said.
“He flew out to Dubai on December 6, six days after celebrating our wedding anniversary, before being called to eternal rest on December 7.”
Ministry of Foreign Affairs permanent secretary Ioane Naivalurua had confirmed the death of Ratu Mikaele, saying the ministry assisted with bringing his remains to Fiji.
“On March 27 last year, he was home to celebrate our son’s 15th birthday, then came back again on July 1 to celebrate his 45th birthday.
“On September 11, he was home for our daughter’s 14th birthday and on September 22, it was my 44th birthday.”
She said after their birthdays, he had said he was still not done with their family celebrations.
