Residents of Korova settlement beside the Fiji Maritime Academy in Suva are prepared for extreme changes in weather conditions.

Speaking on behalf of the settlement, Semiti Cama said for the past few days they had experienced a rise in water levels which is considered far from normal.

“It is fortunate that the waters have not entered our homes when the water levels rise,” Mr Cama said.

“The winds were also strong. It went up to 45 knots, I know this because I am a sailor.”

Despite the imminent threat to the coastal community from strong winds, coastal flooding and large waves, they are prepared to address the situation at any given time.

“We normally tie up our homes; put everything in place in case anything happens during any bad weather ahead of time.

“Only during Winston did we experience serious damage to our homes, but the rest of the cyclones have not severely destructed our homes.

“During the cyclone season or any serious weather warning, the police come and take us to the evacuation centre at Draiba Fijian School.”

Five families reside at the settlement with as many as seventy individuals, including children.
