WITH a combination of youth and some veteran players, the New Zealand men’s volleyball team is eager to stamp their mark in the week-long 2016 World Qualifying and Zonal Volleyball Championships which starts in Suva today.
Hitting the Vodafone Arena in a blow-out session yesterday, head coach Colin Redpath said they were very excited to be a part of the tournament.
“We saw the live streaming of the Oceania tournament and we are pleased to be a part of a few games over here,” Redpath said.
He said they had been camping for few weeks in New Zealand to prepare for the championship.
“Probably four weeks ago most of these players were playing against each other in our club national, so it’s been a bit of a gap since we’ve played a bit of volleyball. We are looking to improve as the week goes on.”
He said their current group of players would also be representing NZ in the upcoming world cup qualifiers.
“They are a good bunch of guys and what’s nice is that we are bringing on developing players who are coming through our junior programs. We have some youths and some experienced old players,” he said.
The competition is set to begin at 10am in the Vodafone Arena at Laucala Bay, today.
