CUVU College’s javelin thrower Atunaisa Sovaki Ketenisaurani is an athlete to watch during the Coca-Cola Games in Suva next month.

The Year 11 student broke the junior boys record of 42.05 metres with a new throw of 48.55m during the Nadroga Navosa Athletics Zone competition at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, yesterday.

Ketenisaurani’s throw shattered the zone’s intermediate boys record of 45.20m and the senior boys record of 47.50m.

He recorded 37.5m in his first attempt, 39m in his second throw and set the record in his last attempt.

Ketenisaurani said he prepared well for the competition.

“I have been preparing well for this game by doing my own training, especially gym work. I am happy with my performance,” he said.

“The competition from my fellow participants enabled me to break the record and I thank the Almighty Lord for this win.”

He said his aim was to stamp his mark in the Coca-Cola Games from April 18-21.

“The games will be tough and I will go back and train hard to win my first ever gold medal in Suva,” he said.

In another record-breaking throw, Malolo lad Vilikesa Sayabo set a record in the intermediate boys javelin.

The Ratu Lalabalavu Secondary School student shattered the old record of 42.50m with a new distance of 45.420m.

In the senior boys javelin, Sigatoka Andhra Sangam College set a new record with a throw of 47.50m.
