There has been an increase in typhoid, dengue, and leptospirosis cases, and the numbers could escalate if not controlled.

And Minister for Health Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete warned of the risk of an outbreak as he called on the public to practise personal and hand hygiene.

While he did not reveal numbers, he said the cases were sitting at a threshold level.

“And this could escalate to an outbreak if not controlled,” he said.

Dr Waqainabete said it was imperative for people to be cautious during this period and to take heed of warnings and advisories.

He said it was imperative for families to practise personal and hand hygiene.

“For anyone that is feeling unwell, has a fever, experiencing joint pains, diarrhoea, headaches or muscle aches, see a doctor.

“Keep compounds, settlements, and villages clean.”

Dr Waqainabete said all crucibles holding water must be overturned or stored away.

He has also stressed the need for people not to swim or wade in contaminated waters.

Dr Waqainabete said families must get rid of rats from their homes and also keep farm animals and livestock 100 or 200 metres away from their homes.

Meanwhile, Fiji recorded two suspected leptospirosis deaths last month and 13 typhoid cases in the Northern Division, three confirmed dengue cases in Lautoka.
