Fiji is a very peaceful country and that is something that we should continue to strive towards.

These were the sentiments echoed by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Major General Jone Kalouniwai after a Remembrance Day commemoration at the National War Memorial in Suva yesterday.

He highlighted dialogue as an important aspect of peacebuilding in the country and reassured Fijians of the stability of the country.

Maj-Gen Kalouniwai said the RFMF will strive to maintain peace and stability in the country to allow the government of the day to work well.

He said most of the retired servicemen were aware of the sheer violence in countries that they have served in, most of which is caused by the lack of dialogue.

“Fiji is a very peaceful country, and we are very fortunate, they (ex-servicemen) will be speaking of their experience while on duty in war-torn countries and when they come back here (Fiji) looking at the peaceful environment that we have it is something that we must continue to strive towards,” he said.

Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua echoed similar sentiments.

He said Fiji is a peace-loving nation and Fijians shared this peace to the world through the various peace keeping mission.

“We can only share peace if we have it and that is the gift we give to the world and we have been in it for almost 50 years now,” Mr Tikoduadua said.

Mr Tikoduadua said Fijians must always strive for peace because the alternative is catastrophic.
