TEN people from the island of Kadavu were referred to the St Giles Psychiatric Hospital in Suva for marijuana-related cases.

This, according to Acting Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu when officially opening the Kadavu Provincial Council meeting in Tavuki Village.

He said people on the island need to fight the war on drugs for the betterment of their future.

He said illegal cultivation of marijuana on the island over the past year resulted in the seizure of more than four tonnes of marijuana with 40 arrests between June 2020 and March 2021.

He said police could not work in isolation and they needed the help of traditional leaders on the island because they had great influence in their respective villages.

He said traditional leaders should not turn a blind eye to the illegal activities on the island.

Between June 2020 and March 2021, Mr Tudravu said they continued to mobilise and curb the illegal trade of marijuana around the country.

He called on people on the island to report any form of illegal activity happening on the island to the police.
