THE Fiji Surfing Association (FSA) has appointed Lesi Navuwai and Hannah Bennett as coach and manager of the Fiji Junior Surfing team to the World
Junior Surfing Championship in California, USA in October.
Navuwai and Bennett are internationally accredited coaches, said FSA head coach Ian Portingale.

“This Saturday Lesi and Hannah will head up a boys only training squad at Suva Lighthouse and the eight-member surfer squad will also be under the guidance of other accredited surf coaches such as Victor Maginnity, Saviri Kalounivale and myself,” Portingale said.

“Early next month there will be a girls only training squad at the swimming pool. Both training sessions form part of the selection criteria for the Fiji
junior surfing team that will head to California in October.

Training will cover technique development, surfing to the judging criteria and contest strategies.”

Meanwhile, the 2018 Druku Memorial Open surfing competition will be held between June 2-9 at Cloudbreak on Tavarua Island.

“This event is to pay respect to chief Druku who died in 2016. The Druku Memorial event this year will incorporate the King of Cloudbreak and the inaugural Queen of Cloudbreak tournaments.

“The events have been developed with prizemonies and will have Fiji’s top surfers displaying a high level of performance at the premier break of Fiji.
There have been a few international female surfers who have entered as well, so both the king and queen winners are sure to be of an elite standard.”

He said last year’s winners were Tevita Gukilau and runner-up was Navuwai.
