Update: 12:59PM HIGH Court judge Justice Priyantha Fernando will sum up the case of the alleged murder of a former journalist Losana McGowan tomorrow.
Prosecution and defence made their closing submissions on the case yesterday afternoon.
In her closing submission, defence counsel Samanunu Vaniqi asked the assessors to find her client Usaia Kilaiverata guilty of manslaughter instead because he had not intended to kill McGowan when he punched her.
She said McGowan’s death was a “tragic accident resulting in a manslaughter charge”.
Ms Vaniqi said her client was drunk and in shock and was grieving when he confessed to Police.
Assistant director of Public Prosecutions Michael Delaney strongly disputed this and said the accused may have had some alcohol but he definitely knew what he was doing.
Kilaiverata is charged with the alleged murder of McGowan who was also his partner.
The alleged incident took place on April 4 last year.
Kilaiverata has been further remanded in custody.
