THE High Court in Suva yesterday convicted Ilaitia Nalawa for the rape of a nine-year-old girl last year.
This after the three assessors in the trial returned with mixed opinions on the charges against Nalawa.
One of the assessor found him not guilty on all the counts of burglary, theft, assault with intent to rape and rape while the other two assessors found him guilty on all the charges.
In his judgment, Justice Temo said he had accepted the majority view of the two assessors and rejected the minority view.
He also sent out a stern warning with regards to the protection of the assessors by the courts.
Justice Temo told the assessors after thanking them for their duty in the five-day trial that if they were threatened by anyone with regards to the outcome of the trial, they must report the matter so that those making threats may face the full brunt of the law.
He will deliver his detailed judgment next Monday.
