Judge convicts senior citizen of rape and sexual assault

HIGH Court judge Justice Riyaz Hamza yesterday convicted a man of three counts of rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of indecently annoying a person.

The 65-year-old man was charged with five counts of rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of indecently annoying a person.

He was found guilty of all the eight counts by the three assessors in the trial.

He raped his granddaughter between 2012 to 2015.

The man had pleaded guilty to one count of rape but had pleaded not guilty to the other six counts.

Justice Hamza said he concurred with the unanimous guilty opinion of the three assessors but he found the man not guilty of one count of rape and then acquitted him accordingly.

The sentencing submission is scheduled to be heard at the High Court in Suva next Tuesday.
