In an era where information flows abundantly, the responsibility of journalists to uphold these principles has never been more critical.

This was highlighted by Papua New Guinea Information and Communication Technology Minister Timothy Masiu while officiating at the University of the South Pacific school of journalism students awards last Friday.

Seventeen USP students were recognised for their hard work, dedication, and exemplary storytelling on the night.

“In a region as rich and diverse as our Pacific, where cultures, languages, and perspectives converge, the role of journalism becomes even more crucial,” Mr Masiu said.

“The stories told by our journalists contribute to the tapestry of our shared experiences, providing insight, fostering understanding, and building bridges across the vast expanse of our Pacific nations.”

He shared that a memorandum of understanding was signed on June 19, 2021 in Suva between the USP Journalism School and PNG National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC).

Through this collaboration, students will have the opportunity to engage with seasoned professionals, gaining insights into the ever-evolving landscape of journalism.

“I wish to see the first lot of USP Journalism students being imbedded in the NBC main newsroom next year.

“I also intend to see the first lot of NBC staff enroll at your Suva campus in the first semester in 2024.”
