TWELVE-YEAR-OLD Joshua Rasmin has vacationed in Fiji with his family on a number of occasions.
However, his recent trip to Fiji last month has proven to be his best one yet.
Joshua was one of the 76 participants in the annual Mana Ocean Swim organised by Mana Island Resort and Spa.
Despite the tough competition, Joshua attained second place in the one kilometre race and first place in the 500-metre event.
“This is my third trip to Fiji and I have been here twice before but I have been to the InterContinental Hotel both times,” Joshua said.
“I live in North Sydney, Australia, and I go to a North Sydney demonstration school and I swim at Monte Pool with the Monte Swim Club twice a week.
“I do about 1.5km to 2km each time.”
The enthusiastic pre-teen visited Fiji with his parents and younger sister Amy, 10, with whom he participated in the races.
“I started swimming a long time ago. I first started swim lessons when I was six months old and I started with squads about two and a half years ago.
“This (Mana Ocean Swim) is my first competition out of Australia and I’ve only done one ocean swim before this, it was in Bondi where I did the 1km and I think it’s really fun.
“I love Fiji, it’s really nice to just be around and there is a lot of stuff to do here.
“The water is really warm so you can spend a lot of time instead of getting really cold like in Sydney, where sometimes in winter, it’s just really cold.
“I really enjoy swimming and it’s one of the main sports for me. I also play soccer and cricket on the weekends but I swim twice a week. I also have cricket training in the week and games in the weekend and the same thing with soccer.”
Joshua is also an active Scout and says he enjoys activities such as camping and canoeing.
“I don’t really know yet what the future holds but I plan to have as much fun as possible along the way. I believe that if you really want to do something, keep working at it as hard as you can and don’t give up.”
