More than 1000 foreigners are applying to the Fiji Immigration Department every month seeking employment in the local tourism industry.

Director Immigration Amelia Komaisavai raised the issue at the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association tourism talanoa session in Denarau, Nadi, yesterday.

Last week, Employment Minister Parveen Kumar raised concerns about the social impact of labour mobility schemes in Fiji.

Speaking at the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) reform stakeholders consultation, he said Fijian employers were up in arms over workers exiting their firms without resigning once they secured jobs under the PALM scheme.

The Fiji Times has also published the concerns of hotel operators who said they were losing chefs and staff members at short notice.

They said if nothing was done to curb the exodus, the issue could hurt the industry and the country.
