JAPAN and the United States will be holding a joint training programme to help Pacific island nations crack down on illegal fishing within their exclusive economic zones.

The Japan Times reported the three-week training course would be held in Japan and begin on 25 November.

Officials from 12 nations, including Palau and the Marshal Islands will learn how the Japan Coast Guard polices its fisheries.

The training program will include fisheries experts from the US.

Japan has also recently dispatched Coast Guard officials to some Pacific nations to provide assistance.

Earlier this year, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe offered assistance to Pacific nations to combat the growth of illegal fishing by foreign vessels.
