VEIUTO Primary School under-13 rugby team proved too strong against Gospel Primary School with a 15-8 victory in the final of the Suva Kaji rugby competition at St Marcellin Primary School ground on Saturday.

Veiuto Primary School held their own against Marist Brothers Primary School in a nail-biting semi-final when the teams went to two periods of sudden death play until Veiuto drove past the Marist defence to score their winning try.

Veiuto team head coach Malakai Tueli said his boys played well despite the close encounter from their opponents and they expected the semi-final match to be a tough one.

“We knew it was going to be a tough battle against Marist, but we were making it hard on us, because we didn’t work as a team but hats off to the boys for coming through the semi-final and beating Gospel in the final,” Tueli said.

“I would like to thank all parents, families and friends for their continuous support and we hope it continues as we go along.”

The Veiuto under-13 ruggers have returned from New Zealand in May playing four games where they won two against Central Bay and Otahuhu under-13 teams, but lost to Kelston Boys and Wesley College under-14 grades.

Meanwhile, St Marcellin Primary School under-9 team defeated Marist Brothers Primary School 5-0 to be crowned champions of the Suva Kaji in that grade.

In the under 10 division, St Marcellin beat Veiuto 7-0 and in the under 11 grade the two schools drew 7-7 to share the spoils of the final.

Dudley Intermediate School under-12 defeated Marist Brothers Primary School 21-14 to win the final.
