Nurses yet to be paid their meal allowances over the past two years will have their grievances addressed.

This was the assurance given by Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum during the 63rd Fiji Nursing Association annual general meeting in Sigatoka.

He explained that administration was an issue in the non-payment of allowances.

“The (FNA) president raised the issue that some nurses haven’t been paid their meal allowances, that needs to be addressed,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“It’s not a question of there’s no funding, it’s a question of administration.

“To be frank with you, a lot of these issues are happening because of the failure of those people that are administering these institutions who are not doing their job on a timely basis and that is part of the Civil Service Reform that we are carrying out.”

The A-G added that allowances for nurses had to be decreased during the pandemic.

“Meal allowances as you know it used to be $9 or $8 when we were appointed in Government, we then put it up to $20.

“After the pandemic, we reduced it from $20 to $10.

“In this revised budget, we had increased it to $15 because we do recognise the rise of food prices, etc and because a lot of outlets that deal with food are about to put up their prices.”
