International School Suva (ISS) Year 5 students held their primary years program exhibition (PYP) at the school’s multi-purpose hall yesterday.

Event co-ordinator Selai Nawai said the exhibition was a culminating experience for students to showcase what they had learnt throughout primary school.

“The purpose of this culminating project is to promote agency, creativity, collaboration and application of learning,” she said.

“During this student-led unit, students do an in-depth inquiry into their personal interests, as well as local or global issues.

“Apart from their research they will also have to take action. “For example, one of the boys chose coral bleaching as his topic, so he went to Sigatoka to do coral planting.”

Ms Selai said for the past seven weeks the students had been involved in an extensive investigation on different topics of interest.

“The topics range from climate change, lost art form practices, importance of healthy eating, social media communication, coral bleaching and many more.”

Throughout the process, students, teachers, mentors, parents and other members of the community worked together in an experience incorporating the essential elements of the PYP.
