Islanders mark year

TOP rugby league players for USP Islanders rugby league club Tevita Kalou and Peter Wong notched the best player of the year award in the premier grade during the awards at the USP Bure in Suva on Saturday.

The duo shared the award after putting up a sterling performance in the Fiji National Rugby League domestic competition.

Kalou, 21, who is originally from Koro, Lomaiviti, said he was surprised when his name was called out.

“I never expected to receive an award in my life since there were a lot of talented players in the team even some reached the Fiji Bati level and when I came I did not expected to win,” he said.

“I want to become a NRL player and represent Fiji Bati.

“The shields were given by Ratu Epi Batirerega Waisale while University of the South Pacific’s Dr. Wilfred Golman was the chief guest.
