Invite to charity walk

WITH less than a week to go before the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort and Spa Walk for Kids next Saturday, general manager Peter Hopgood is calling on businesshouses to participate in the charity event.

“This is our fourth walkathon and the funds raised will go towards two very worthy causes.

“Firstly, it’s for the purchase of a four-wheel-drive vehicle for the Sigatoka Special School and second, it’s for construction of teachers’ quarters at Conua District school,” he said.

Mr Hopgood said he hoped to raise $30,000 to help buy a 4WD vehicle to allow Sigatoka Special School teachers to conduct outreach programs for students with special needs who could not attend school.

He said funds would also be used to aid in the construction costs of teachers’ quarters at Conua.

“We are requesting that businesshouses from all over Fiji come and join us to raise money for these two very special causes.

“If you would like to join us please contact our director of sales, Petero Manufolau at and he will send you a sponsorship card,” he said.

Mr Hopgood said he was happy to be a designated walker for any individual or organisation that wished to contribute towards the event.

Over the past three years, funds raised through the Walk for Kids have resulted in new walkways and railings being built at the Sigatoka Special School. A carpentry workshop for the boys was built with funds from the walk.

In April, 2017, 11 boys received certificates in carpentry and were undertaking work experience at the resort.”

Outrigger Fiji’s involvement in Conua District School has increased the school roll from 55 in 2010 to 165 students this year.

The school’s pass rate last year was 87 per cent compared with 38 per cent in 2010.
