Intern nurse goes to prison

Listen to this article:

AN intern nurse charged with rape has been sentenced to eight years and 11 months in jail with a non-parole period of four years and 11 months.

Prashant Dass, 25 appeared before High Court Judge, Justice Vinsent Perera in the High Court in Labasa.

Justice Perera told the court that the incident happened two years ago at a nursing station when Dass examined a pregnant woman who turned up for her clinic.

“Though you were an intern nurse when you committed this offence, you were part of public health service and represented the Government of Fiji when you conducted the clinic,” he said.

“Your counsel argued that you were inexperienced at that time, however, the fact that were established during the trial suggest otherwise.

“You have not respected the victim’s bodily autonomy and you do not need to be a professional nurse to understand the fact that you cannot invade the body of a woman and violate her personal inner space.”
