AN Interfaith Ecumenical Vigil for the victims of the Christchurch terror attacks was held at the Holy Trinity Anglican Cathedral in Suva today.

Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said if we considered ourselves brothers and sisters then it we must be deeply concerned about each other irrespective of which faith, religion or place of worship we belonged too.

“If you look at the core principles of any religion it teaches love , it teaches us to be all good humans to each other and the unfortunate thing about fear and about faith in particular is that it dehumanizes people,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

Fiji Muslim League religious adviser Mufti Mahbob Sher Khan said attacking people in their place of worship was a senseless terrorism act.

“We pray of humanity and in particular for the people of New Zealand and their leaders who have shown courageous solidarity for the families suffering and who have condemned the act of violence,” Mr Khan said.

New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Fiji Jonathan Curr said we all needed an outlet like this to grief and understand the reality of this cold and barbaric act of terror in Christchurch.

“These acts and the extreme views that led to death have no place in New Zealand , they have no place anywhere,” Mr Curr said.

More than 200 people  from all religious backgrounds attended the vigil to pay their respects to the  50 people who were killed in the Christchurch Massacre , three of whom were Fijians.
