INFRASTRUCTURE development or construction is one of the highest contributors to economic growth for this year and more is expected from the sector next year. Infrastructure and Transport Minister Pio Tikoduadua said the whole reason behind having a special budget forum was to get the government to look at making a better contribution to the various sectors by seeing their economic performance.
He said by looking at the private sector and the communities, the government would look at ways in meeting their needs in the next budget. “One of the most important areas now is infrastructure and we need to look at constructions being carried out in the country,” he said.
He said roads provided access to where agricultural activities took place and significant changes had been seen since the road reforms were put in place two years ago.
“We are determined to move infrastructure development in the right direction and we are looking at better integration or creating some joint effects within the department that share the same physical space,” he said.
“We want to make sure that we share costs so that we provide better for the people by becoming efficient in the way we use or deal with our resources.
“Before, the different departments used to consider their own budgets. Now, we have to look at each department and see where we are spending so that we do not step on each other’s toes.”
