MORE than 1000 students were reminded about the importance of dental hygiene during the launch of the National Tooth Brushing Day at Rishkhul Primary School in Nasinu yesterday.
Health and Medical Services Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete, who was chief guest, said they had been organising the event for more than 10 years.
“The event is important so that people can be reminded to keep their teeth clean, healthy and strong,” Dr Waqainabete said.
“Inside our mouth there are small bacteria, you can’t see it.
“Sometimes food stuff are stuck in between the teeth — is a place for all bad bacteria to hide, they feed on the food and the gums leading to tooth decay.”
He said smoking was also another cause of tooth decay for adults.
“Some older people have missing teeth because they don’t look after it.
“This program is best to be done for children because you still have all your teeth”
Dr Waqainabete said in the Pacific, we were strong with health because the nurses carried out regular check ups.
Meanwhile, Colgate-Palmolive (Fiji) Ltd handed out toothbrushes and toothpastes to students yesterday as part of the program.
