Years of working in the city, with its share of hustle and stress, can take a toll on health and one’s mental outlook.
That is why a “change of scenery” was part of Ilaitia Musunamasi’s bucket list in early 2019.
So when the chance to work in Vanua Levu popped up, he quickly grabbed the opportunity to work at Savusavu’s Koro Sun Resort and Rainforest Spa, where he is the guest service agent in the front office department.
Seven months have passed since he joined and he loves how life in the North seems laid-back and people are so easygoing.
“Suva is fast-paced and busy so it took me some time to adapt to the new work culture and environment here,” says Ilaitia, who hails from Yale, Kadavu and has maternal links to Daliconi, Vanuabalavu.
The move to Savusavu has benefited me.
There is definitely less stress and I have a great work environment.
I am surrounded by great people and nature, the sea at one end and the forest at the other.”
One of the challenges Ilaitia faced initially was missing his friends and family.
Luckily, his work family at the resort made his transition smooth and feel good.
“The key to enjoying your work is having great people around and for me, I’ve been fortunate enough to work with good people and good bosses who encourage and motivate me.
“Since high school I’ve always had a liking for work in the hospitality industry and I haven’t regretted that.
With undisturbed coral reefs, beautiful beaches and virgin forest trees within reach, Ilaitia makes sure he spends his free time in the outdoors.
“There’s a lot adventurous things you can do in Savusau. For me, to unwind I love to snorkel and fish.
“And when I am really up for it, I light a fire on the beach, cook fish I catch over an open fire and have it with lemon and chilly.”
