Fiji has been recognised by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) for its thorough and effective implementation of safety and oversight systems.

This was shared by Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF) acting CEO and controller aviation security and facilitation, Rigamoto Aisake, while submitting their Annual Report for 2020 before the Standing Committee on Social Affairs in Suva.

He said Fiji was part of 193 states that were under the ICAO banner, alongside other aviation organisations across the world.

“Just yesterday (Wednesday) in Montreal, where they are holding the ICAO 41st Assembly, Fiji was awarded the ICAO Council President’s Certificate in recognition of Fiji’s progress in establishing an effective safety and oversight system and improving effective implementation of applicable ICAO standards,” he said.

“That is an achievement for a small state like Fiji. We are punching above our weight and it is the commitment and dedication of the CAAF team, staff and partners within the aviation industry, including Government, that has made this possible.”

As a member state of ICAO, Mr Aisake said Fiji was subject to audits by ICAO to ensure all procedures and systems in place were of international standards.

“We improved Fiji’s rating at the last in-country validation mission in 2019 to 78 per cent. Previously we had a rating of 63 per cent.

“CAAF is ISO-9001 2015 certified and is exploring further quality certifications in the future. We are an enabler for connectivity, trade and economic growth and without aviation, there can be no economic growth in terms of hastening economic recovery post COVID.”

According to Mr Aisake, CAAF was also undergoing a job evaluation exercise designed to deal with issues of recruitment, restructure of re-numeration and retention.

“Our projects include a review of aviation legislation where we are working closely with Government to ensure that our legislations are able to address the growing concerns of today.”
